As a spiritual humanist, I am not always sure if praying changes anything about the world, but I am certain that the act of praying changes us. By sharing our deepest hopes for healing, compassion, and justice with each other and by reaching out beyond ourselves, we are changed. The feeling of connection built by prayer can energize us for the work of creating the beloved community; it can comfort us in our aloneness and sorrow; it can lead us down paths of forgiveness; and it can hold us tenderly in those quiet moments of grace.
